Not only that, as of Wednesday afternoon Piela was the top vote-getter on People magazine's and Major League Baseball's "Sexest Fan Alive" contest online. Piela has a comfortable lead in the contest with 20,203 votes. As his wife, who nominated Piela, explains: "He is amazingly good-looking, extremely fit, a wonderful husband, and even more importantly, the best father." There are currently eight other finalists in the competition. The winner will score a pair of tickets to the World Series and be featured in an ad in People's annual "Sexiest Man Alive" issue. Officer says obstructed view caused Friday wreck
A Henderson County Sheriff's Department officer escaped injury Friday afternoon when the county vehicle he was driving struck a van at the intersection of Edmonson and Cream Level Road in North Athens.According to Department of Public Safety reports, Sgt. Thomas Lee Robertson, 36, was driving a 2007 Ford pick-up east on Edmonson St. when the vehicle approached the intersection with Cream Level Road. Robertson attempted to make a left turn and struck the side of a 2006 Dodge Caravan driven by Sylvia De la Garza, 50, of Mabank.De la Garza refused transport by ambulance and was taken by a private vehicle to East Texas Medical Center in Athens, where she was treated and released. Two small children who were passengers in the van were not injured.DPS reports state Robertson's view of the intersection was impaired by large brush and trees.

Opposition treasury spokesman Malcolm Turnbull backed comments by former Coalition treasurer Peter Costello last week that the banks were taking advantage of Treasurer Wayne Swan's inexperience. "Wayne Swan is being treated like a mug by the banks, no question," Mr Turnbull said on ABC radio today. He described as "absolutely dismal" Mr Swan's performance on interest rates. "When the NAB came out and put up rates the first time, Wayne Swan defended them with an eager enthusiasm that made him sound like a public relations officer for the Australian Bankers Association," Mr Turnbull said. The threat of the banks raising mortgage rates independently of the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) was "always coming up in the lift". "Wayne Swan did nothing to get ready for it.
