In county of 5,336 lawyers, one made headlines

The ex-American Idol hopeful, pregnant and jailed for violating her probation, got a break when a Tampa judge sent her to drug rehab instead of prison. Fitzgibbons said the treatment will save her life.

The suspended University of South Florida student, fighting federal explosives charges, tried to fire Fitzgibbons. He said the attorney accepted $750,000 just to push for a guilty plea. "Pure fantasy," Fitzgibbons said.

One judge scolded Sierra for talking to reporters and another went easy on teacher-turned-sex offender Lafave, accused of getting too friendly with a teenage co-worker. Fitzgibbons said, "It was a busy week."

John Fitzgibbons juggled court hearings last week for famous clients. A look at his calendar:

Duluth man leading in baseball playoffs’ ‘sexiest fan’ contest

Another drawback to the Atlanta Braves not snagging a spot in the playoffs? Duluth residents like Chris Piela think it's actually OK to root for the Boston Red Sox. Not only that, as of Wednesday afternoon Piela was the top vote-getter on People magazine's and Major League Baseball's "Sexest Fan Alive" contest online.

Piela has a comfortable lead in the contest with 20,203 votes.

As his wife, who nominated Piela, explains: "He is amazingly good-looking, extremely fit, a wonderful husband, and even more importantly, the best father."

There are currently eight other finalists in the competition. The winner will score a pair of tickets to the World Series and be featured in an ad in People's annual "Sexiest Man Alive" issue. The voting continues through Oct.

Tattle | Was tour the cure? Police eye a new album

Tom Sizemore says he's done with drugs.

"I'm not trading my whole life for some powder," the 45-year-old actor told The Bakersfield Californian in a jailhouse interview. He's serving time for violating probation and will be released next month.

"God's trying to tell me he doesn't want me using drugs because every time I use them I get caught," Sizemore said.

Sometimes God works in mysterious ways. Then there are those other times.

Halle's hyperbolic

The pregnancy hormones are flowing for pregnant Halle Berry, whose comments to "Extra's" AJ Calloway at the New York premiere of her film, "Things We Lost in the Fire" were so ripe with emotion they required multiple exclamation points in translation.

"It's an exciting time in my life!!" she declared.

And, regarding her model boyfriend and baby daddy Gabriel Aubry: "He's an excellent cook.

CLINTON: Not who she wants you to believe

On Sept. 14, 2001, Hillary Clinton, New York's junior senator, visited Ground Zero. You might not have read it in the New York Times, but many of New York's finest, the police officers and firemen, refused to shake her hand."Did you know: "On Oct. 20, 2002, she was literally booed off the stage at Paul McCartney's benefit concert for New York? The boos were substantially edited out when the tape was sold to the public." (from http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/818364/posts)Did you know even though she sits on the Senate Committee on Armed Services, that under her watch, "James J. DiGeorgio and Carl Steubing died in ways no war veteran should. They were subjected to illegal drug experimentation by employees of the Stratton Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Albany, N.Y.; killed by servants of the very government they fought to protect." (from http://www.commondreams.org/views06/0828-24.htm)As with all of the Republican candidates running for president, Hillary Clinton takes contributions and donations from several Political Action Committees (PAC) toward her campaign. That money goes into her pocket for her election just as the PAC's go into her pocket for "favors" later toward legislation.Barack Obama, on the other hand, takes money only from the American public -- they are the ones to whom he will be indebted and obligated. The question becomes, do you want a president who owes PACs favors, or one who owes the American public? I believe it's time we made that decision for the presidency as well as all members of the United States House and the Senate.
