| Rogers shares hurt by talk of Telus technology shift
The main selling point of GSM (global system for mobile communication) is that it's the most popular cellphone technology around the world. That means GSM carriers such as Rogers tend to get devices at cheaper prices and sooner than their rivals, including Telus, which use CDMA (code division multiple access) technology. Making such a jump, however, would be a tricky endeavour for Telus. It could cost anywhere from several hundred million up to a billion dollars, analysts reckon. Moreover, the time required for such a change is uncertain, with some suggesting it could be done within a year and others estimating it could take twice as long. "I don't envy the decision because I don't think it's an easy one," said National Bank Financial Inc. analyst Greg MacDonald.
Unversity Place litigation settled
The bedroom ceiling now needs replacement and it turns out to be asbestos. My home is a construction zone, and my husband and I are sleeping downstairs not an easy place for me to get with the hurt knee. I smashed my little finger in one of those theater seats in the Senate gallery. I got scooped by the Lewiston Tribune. I got double-booked on a dinner I set up for the family gathering and am scrambling to cancel caterers and reschedule the whole thing elsewhere. I missed a grant deadline. My knee brace tore a hole in my favorite black pants. My cat brought in a live bird that my husband cornered in the house the next day, and Im still finding feathers. I missed most of the best ski season in years, and the doctor says my knee wont be ready for windsurfing until August despite my cherished goal of June.
GOP VIPs ponder David Iglesias fallout
Damron from the ticket last year in favor of John Dendahl. Dendahl wound up receiving little support from the state party and stumbled to a historic defeat, then left the state with a less-than-generous benediction. "The Republican Party is mortally wounded," Cargo, who sits on the party's central committee, said. "But once Bill (Richardson) leaves and these indictments come down, there may not be much left of the Democratic Party either." For now, at least, Democrats seemed happy to watch the unfolding battle in their opponent's camp. Matt Farrauto, the executive director of the New Mexico Democratic Party, said he had little to add to what had already been reported, but did his best. Brutally parodying an episode last year in which Domenici was seen at his Capital Hill office wearing what were described as pajamas - Domenici said they were actually hunting pants - Farrauto said it was increasingly clear the venerable senator was vulnerable.
From the Editor :
Sorry to see Shaun Pollock go. I hate to think he was pushed as has been suggested by some commentators. I was lucky enough to see him almost take the match away from Australia in Adelaide in 1998 during an amazing day of bowling in typical Adelaide summer weather (bloody hot). He toiled all day (Donald was injured) and took a bunch of wickets on a heart-breaking pitch in Australia's first innings to give South Africa a big lead - the innings was also notable for Mark Taylor carrying his bat, which was probably the difference in the end between a South African win and the eventual draw. South Africa came within three Aussie wickets of winning that match. Shaun Pollock has done his gene pool proud, and that's not an easy feat considering who's in that gene pool. .
Meat-Axe Justice
So many black males are going to prison now that it is a black rite of passage; their forced surrender to reality of justice in America. In nine states, up to 40% of black males are not permitted to vote because their citizenship has been taken away. Of course, now there are over a million black males in prison, but is anyone troubled by this? Not really, and besides, the good people of Tehachapi are begging bread from a flush-with-money prison system to build their hospital. Doesn't this strike anyone as even a tiny bit odd? Since many claim scripture for guidance, don't you think there is some counsel therein for conscientious citizens? What about a cruel David and the little ewe lamb? Do we have the wit to discern and repent when timely truths visit? David did, to his credit.
Wild Card/Vacation Day 11 of 12
Only two more shopping days until I return to the final days of the City Council campaigns. Then, we'll have fun taking apart the campaigns. Any dirt yet? Any mudslinging. You know, the good stuff. Or is everyone behaving? My wife is now looking over my shoulder -- literally -- so I have to pretend that I'm just checking ball scores. See ya in two days. Here's Wild Card ... .
