New sex-offender laws, meant to protect, may instead ruin lives and increase risks
Everything began with babysitting. Michael's mother often made him watch her boyfriend's 7-year-old son, Aaron. One afternoon, while his mother was working, 15-year-old Michael performed oral sex on Aaron, and on at least three occasions persuaded the child to fondle him in return. What happened during those afternoons remained secret until Aaron tried to touch a cousin, who told his parents. Together, the boys' families dug out the truth about Michael. What he did may have been an echo of what was done to him. Michael said he spent the first half of his life being sexually abused by a grandfather who held his grandson on his naked lap. “Growing up, I had been through some sexual situations with older people, so I think it was acting out of curiosity.

Donation will help agency's works
A donation from the Val Verde County Sheriffs Office will help a local agency in areas where traditional funding does not cover. Earlier this month the Sheriffs Office Santas donated $400 to the Quad Counties Council for Alcohol and Drug Abuse. According to Quad Counties Executive Director Simon Sotelo, the money will be used to help fund incentives used to draw people toward events that focus on drug prevention and awareness. Areas typically not allowed by the state agencies that fund the organization. (This money) will enable us to do prevention more effectively, especially in training parents in different subjects related to substance abuse prevention with adolescent kids, such as recognizing early signs (of drug use), said Sotelo. Sotelo said some of the money will be spent on a project called Quad en tu Barrio (Quad in your neighborhood), where Quad Counties hosts loteria (bingo) sessions in different area colonias.
Get TechWeb's RSS Feed
RSS is an Internet format that gives you a new way to quickly and easily access Web-based headlines, blurbs, and article links from a wide variety of sources. It's most often used for showing the latest headlines from online newspapers, magazines, weblogs, and vendor and technology information sites. Using Automatic Discovery To access an RSS feed, you need a software program known as a news aggregator or RSS reader. If you already have a news aggregator and it supports auto-discovery, you can usually add an RSS link for a given site by using your aggregator to surf the home page of that Web site. Adding An RSS Link Manually When auto-discovery doesn't work, the manual process is easy enough: 1. Copy the RSS feed link from the content site.

Wild Card/Vacation Day 11 of 12
Only two more shopping days until I return to the final days of the City Council campaigns. Then, we'll have fun taking apart the campaigns. Any dirt yet? Any mudslinging. You know, the good stuff. Or is everyone behaving? My wife is now looking over my shoulder -- literally -- so I have to pretend that I'm just checking ball scores. See ya in two days. Here's Wild Card ... .
Rogers shares hurt by talk of Telus technology shift
The main selling point of GSM (global system for mobile communication) is that it's the most popular cellphone technology around the world. That means GSM carriers such as Rogers tend to get devices at cheaper prices and sooner than their rivals, including Telus, which use CDMA (code division multiple access) technology. Making such a jump, however, would be a tricky endeavour for Telus. It could cost anywhere from several hundred million up to a billion dollars, analysts reckon. Moreover, the time required for such a change is uncertain, with some suggesting it could be done within a year and others estimating it could take twice as long. "I don't envy the decision because I don't think it's an easy one," said National Bank Financial Inc. analyst Greg MacDonald.
Rutkowski moving on
When Ed Rutkowski and his wife moved to the Patterson Park area on the city's east side in 1986, it was the sort of place, he said, where everything was in good shape and neighbors pitched in to keep it that way. But over the next decade, the region slid headfirst into decline. Drug dealers set up shop in its 140-acre park. Prostitutes worked the corners, and Rutkowski's neighbors - the same ones he saw at community Christmas parties - abandoned Baltimore in droves. Rutkowski, however, got to work. He founded the Patterson Park Community Development Corp., which many now credit for the area's healthy turnaround. And now, after 11 years at its helm, Rutkowski is moving on. .
Irrigation Dept told to review
When the journalist refused to supply the CD which contained footage of the incident, a false FIR was registered against them under Section 306 of the IPC. The complainants stated before the Commission that the SSP, Mukstsar, had threatened them as they had refused to hand over the CD which showed the inhuman act of the police. One of the scribes, Mr Harjit Singh, who moved the Commission, stated that after arresting the girl and the boys, the police took them to the Gidderwaha Police Station and produced them before the Station House Officer Balkar Singh. The police tried to snatch the video camera of the scribes when the footage was being recorded. On July 29, 2006, the complainants were called to the office of the SSP, Mr Nageswar Rao, who asked them to hand over the CD to him.
