READING about preventing catastrophic illness is as unpleasant as reading the fine print on a will, power of attorney or a life insurance policy. Facing our mortality and learning about preventing heart, lung or kidney failure, strokes, amputations, dementia and hip replacements, is not easy, but we should do it as a necessary part of protecting those we love. As medical technologies keep our ageing population alive longer, the over-50s age group will become a heavy burden on the young. The escalating costs of healthcare and private health insurance; the increasing strain on accident and emergency departments, hospitals and nursing homes and the worsening medical and nursing shortage have been identified by the new federal Labor Government as a first-order economic challenge.

With rumors of a new sub-notebook Mac to be announced there next month, many are speculating that Apple's stock will continue to rise through 2008 as high as $300 per share and beyond. Despite overall disappointment in holiday sales this year, the quarter ending on December 31 could be a banner one for the Cupertino company. .
Services needed to break young user cycle
TEENAGERS are dying and families are being torn apart due to a lack of services for adolescent drug addicts, campaigners have claimed. A shortage of detox facilities for teenagers, a lack of mental health beds, no proper aftercare for teen drug users when they come out of treatment along with limited accommodation facilities for recovering addicts are combining to create a crisis within Ireland's adolescent population.
While services for teenage addicts improved in recent years, much of a 2005 government-sponsored report on the problem remains to be implemented.
Professionals have identified the lack of residential detox facilities, specifically earmarked for adolescents, as a key weakness in the State's battle against drug addiction.
Two of the country's main drug treatment centres, Beaumount Hospital and Cuan Dara in Dublin, have no designated detox programmes or beds for under-18s.
Helping women start tech firms
Kris Appel stood before investors this week and delivered a seven-minute pitch on the market viability of an exercise device that helps stroke survivors regain their arm movement.
The presentation at a biosciences conference in Baltimore was Appel's latest effort to raise money for her startup company, which grew out of a program that trains and helps women start technology-based businesses.
Called ACTiVATE, the backbone of the program gives women access to technology and research created by the region's laboratories and universities with a goal of commercializing such homegrown innovations. Since its start in 2005, the program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County has produced 12 startups, including Appel's.

Carl Junction to consider new turf for football field
Carl Junction is a member of the Committee for Educational Equality, one of the groups suing the state over its funding formula for education. The committee was dealt a loss by Cole County Circuit Court Judge Richard Callahan, who dismissed all of the committee's claims earlier this year. .
