Restoration brings glow back to BGE and downtown

The Lexington Street construction fences are now down at Baltimore Gas and Electric Co.'s former headquarters. After months of renovation, one of downtown's most dignified office buildings (1916) has been reinvented by being made into apartments. I can't think of a better boost to this downtown Baltimore neighborhood.

I pushed through the big revolving doors yesterday and found the lobby looking the best it's appeared in my memory. This preservation-driven rehab has exposed limestone walls hidden by unfortunate attempts at modernization in the groovy 1960s. Not everything is World War I-era here: The lobby is clean and fresh, with a honey wood tone lobby reception desk and new light fixtures.

VH1's cameras watch as celebrities go through rehab

Recording devices were everywhere inside a Pasadena, Calif., residential treatment facility, yielding what is being billed as television's first look inside the mystery of rehabilitation - and all under the supervision of the only celebrity in the room without an addiction.

CHARLIE'S STORY

Camelot Counseling Centers opened Staten Island's first adolescent male residential program in 1992. Incredibly, in New York City, there are fewer than 200 beds for youths in public treatment programs for chemical dependency.

Camelot is prepared to house up to 35 young adults who will undergo rehabilitation, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

In our program, these young men will receive individual counseling, family therapy, group therapy, multi-family group, vocational services, on-site educational service and participate in recreational activities.

Organizations like the Staten Island Children's Campaign assist agencies such as Camelot in restoring hope to struggling Island youths and provides them with the opportunity to turn their lives around.

Ex-reliever Beck, 38, found dead

Rod Beck, a relief pitcher who wore a bushy mustache while earning 286 career saves, was found dead Saturday. He was 38.

Beck was found by police officers responding to a call to his home in suburban Phoenix, according to police department spokesman Andy Hill. Foul play is not suspected, though the cause of death might not be known for several days.

With long hair framing a menacing stare and an aggressive arm swing before delivering a pitch, the outgoing right-hander was a memorable baseball personality and a three-time All-Star who twice led the NL in saves. He spent the first seven of his 13 major league seasons with the San Francisco Giants.

Helping women start tech firms

Kris Appel stood before investors this week and delivered a seven-minute pitch on the market viability of an exercise device that helps stroke survivors regain their arm movement.

The presentation at a biosciences conference in Baltimore was Appel's latest effort to raise money for her startup company, which grew out of a program that trains and helps women start technology-based businesses.

Called ACTiVATE, the backbone of the program gives women access to technology and research created by the region's laboratories and universities with a goal of commercializing such homegrown innovations. Since its start in 2005, the program at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County has produced 12 startups, including Appel's.

CLINTON: Not who she wants you to believe

On Sept. 14, 2001, Hillary Clinton, New York's junior senator, visited Ground Zero. You might not have read it in the New York Times, but many of New York's finest, the police officers and firemen, refused to shake her hand."Did you know: "On Oct. 20, 2002, she was literally booed off the stage at Paul McCartney's benefit concert for New York? The boos were substantially edited out when the tape was sold to the public." (from http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/818364/posts)Did you know even though she sits on the Senate Committee on Armed Services, that under her watch, "James J. DiGeorgio and Carl Steubing died in ways no war veteran should. They were subjected to illegal drug experimentation by employees of the Stratton Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Albany, N.Y.; killed by servants of the very government they fought to protect." (from http://www.commondreams.org/views06/0828-24.htm)As with all of the Republican candidates running for president, Hillary Clinton takes contributions and donations from several Political Action Committees (PAC) toward her campaign. That money goes into her pocket for her election just as the PAC's go into her pocket for "favors" later toward legislation.Barack Obama, on the other hand, takes money only from the American public -- they are the ones to whom he will be indebted and obligated. The question becomes, do you want a president who owes PACs favors, or one who owes the American public? I believe it's time we made that decision for the presidency as well as all members of the United States House and the Senate.

Hollywood takes action hero Jesus to India

Casting for suitable Bollywood and Hollywood actors has begun. "The Bible devotes just seven words to the most formative years of Yeshua's life saying: 'The boy grew in wisdom and stature'. The [film] will follow Christ's journey to the east where he encounters other traditions, and discovers the principles that are the bedrock of all the world's great religions," said Drew Heriot, the film's director, whose credits include the cult hit The Secret. The film, which is due for release in 2009, sets out to be a fantasy action adventure account of Jesus's life with the three wise men as his mentors. Although the producers say the film will feature a "young and beautiful" princess, it is not clear whether Jesus is to have a love interest. The producers say they are hoping for commercial and spiritual gains.
