2007: What
A Year! Looking Back (to back to back) This past year will long be remembered as the one that put Boone on the national map after the Appalachian State Mountaineers pulled what has been hailed as the college football upset of the century — defeating Michigan 34-32 on Sept. 1 in Ann Arbor. The implausible win was a prelude to the Mountaineers’ third consecutive national championship. For a look back on the year that was, please read on. January • RedTail Mountain, a gated residential community situated 20 miles northwest of Boone, unveils its plans to the public. The community occupies land formerly known as Roan Valley Country Club Estates. The property features an 18-hole golf course and a private lake house and dock on Watauga Lake.
Donation will help agency's works
A donation from the Val Verde County Sheriffs Office will help a local agency in areas where traditional funding does not cover. Earlier this month the Sheriffs Office Santas donated $400 to the Quad Counties Council for Alcohol and Drug Abuse. According to Quad Counties Executive Director Simon Sotelo, the money will be used to help fund incentives used to draw people toward events that focus on drug prevention and awareness. Areas typically not allowed by the state agencies that fund the organization. (This money) will enable us to do prevention more effectively, especially in training parents in different subjects related to substance abuse prevention with adolescent kids, such as recognizing early signs (of drug use), said Sotelo. Sotelo said some of the money will be spent on a project called Quad en tu Barrio (Quad in your neighborhood), where Quad Counties hosts loteria (bingo) sessions in different area colonias.

Charles James Williams is out of work. Nonetheless, he's a grateful man this holiday season. Newly free after spending about six months in jail for burglarizing churches to support a crack cocaine habit, Williams, 55, has been welcomed into the Frederick County Drug Treatment Court. To be accepted into the program, Williams had to admit guilt for his crimes -- and the eight local churches he burglarized had to go along with the plea agreement reached by the defense and the prosecution. "I attribute it to God," Williams said. "It's nothing short of a miracle." The incentive to abide by the rules of drug court is great -- failure to do so could result in a 30-year prison sentence on burglary charges. "At 55, that would be a life sentence," Williams said. The father of two sons ages 13 and 25, wants to warn young people not to get sucked into addiction through peer pressure.

Unversity Place litigation settled
The bedroom ceiling now needs replacement and it turns out to be asbestos. My home is a construction zone, and my husband and I are sleeping downstairs not an easy place for me to get with the hurt knee. I smashed my little finger in one of those theater seats in the Senate gallery. I got scooped by the Lewiston Tribune. I got double-booked on a dinner I set up for the family gathering and am scrambling to cancel caterers and reschedule the whole thing elsewhere. I missed a grant deadline. My knee brace tore a hole in my favorite black pants. My cat brought in a live bird that my husband cornered in the house the next day, and Im still finding feathers. I missed most of the best ski season in years, and the doctor says my knee wont be ready for windsurfing until August despite my cherished goal of June.

'Blade runner' loses Beijing hopes
The runner finished second in an able-bodied race in Rome in 2007, then came last and was subsequently disqualified for stepping out of his lane in a race in Sheffield, England later the same year. The IAAF said that after the Italian race, evidence suggested an athlete with prosthetic limbs performed differently than an able-bodied athlete, and it agreed with Pistorius that more tests were needed. The IAAF does not prohibit prosthetic limbs in able-bodied sports, but it does ban technical aids. Pistorius is reported to be considering an appeal against the verdict. Athletics South Africa said it would immediately apply the decision which does does not affect Pistorius' eligibility for Paralympic events. "It's unfortunate because he could have boosted team athletics at the Olympics at Beijing because he had the potential to qualify," said Leonard Chuene, president of Athletics South Africa.
